Identifying Your Early Signs of Anger and Stress
Building up to a full body response to threat is
a process that starts long before the final explosion(s). If you have read the previous
two pages before getting here (use the back button above to get to them if you haven't),
you are well aware that your daily stress level plays a very important part in your
ability to participate effectively in problem-solving discussions with others.
Common Subjective Signs of the Fight/Flight Response:
The following is a list of some of the
common signs people notice within themselves that indicate that they are beginning to
prepare for a Fight/Flight Response.
- Muscular Tension (possibly clinched fists &/or jaws, facial
grimaces, other muscular tension)
- Feelings of Frustration, Irritation, Agitation, &/or Annoyance
- Ruminating on angry thoughts which may include distorted thoughts
about the other person and his/her intentions
- Pacing around
- Name-calling, making insulting remarks
- What else?
Again, as in symptoms of stress, each individual will have
his/her own unique set of signs and they may also be different under different
circumstances.
Now, print out this sheet and us it to identify and
write down your own personal signs of the Fight/Flight Response. If you have difficulty,
ask someone close to you what they notice when you are angry -- then spend some time
focusing your awareness (the next time you are angry) so that you build your ability to
monitor yourself for those signs.
